Albuquerque Journal 2008/12/10) NM Ex-agents Each Get 6 Years in Prison. By Tim Korte. https //www abqjournal com/news/state/apprison12-10-08 htm Excerpt: Two former San Juan County law enforcement agents who worked on a narcotics task force each received six-year prison sentences Wednesday for their roles in a drug distribution ring. Former state police Officer Keith Salazar and former San Juan County sheriff's Deputy Levi Countryman each pleaded guilty earlier this year to a charge of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances. Prosecutors commended the FBI for cracking the case. U.S. Attorney Greg Fouratt said Salazar and Countryman were paid by drug dealers for sharing closely held police information, including the identities of confidential informants and officers working undercover. By doing so, they endangered the lives of law enforcement colleagues. "In a way, this sentencing is bittersweet," Fouratt said. "You have police officers who are going on the payroll of violent drug traffickers and exchanging sensitive law enforcement information for money." U.S. District Judge James Browning also ordered five years of supervised release after the men complete their prison terms. A third man wanted in the case, Daniel Tarango Jr., remains a fugitive. The FBI has said he is armed and dangerous. Salazar and Countryman were assigned to the Region II Narcotics Task Force established to reduce narcotics use, sales and trafficking in San Juan County, according to an indictment. The indictment accused the three men of working together to traffic and distribute narcotics during much of 2007. Salazar resigned last year after being confronted with the allegations. Sheriff's officials have said Countryman left the department in 2004. https //www abqjournal com/news/state/apprison12-10-08 htm Stop the Drug War 2007/12/07 Cops charged in drug case 12/7/07 10 pm: Cops charged in drug case.
